James W. Sire was a professor of English literature, philosophy and theology at the college, chief editor of the Christian publishing house InterVarsity Press, lecturer at more than two hundred universities in the United States, Canada, Eastern and Western Europe and Asia, author of twenty books on literature, philosophy and Christianity. His book, The Universe Next Door, published in 1976, has sold over 350,000 copies and has been translated into 18 languages. He holds a B. A. in chemistry and English from the University of Nebraska, an M. A. in English from Washington State College (now the University), and a Ph. D. in English from the University of Missouri.
