Hermann Bavinck (1854−1921) was born in the Netherlands into the family of a Reformed pastor. In 1880 he graduated from the University of Leiden, defending his doctoral dissertation with honors. After serving for one year as a pastor of the Reformed Church in the north of the country, he accepted an invitation from the Theological Seminary in Kampen and taught dogmatics and ethics there for 20 years. In 1902, Bavinck left Kampen and was appointed professor at the Free University of Amsterdam. In 1911 he became a member of parliament and until his death he combined teaching and political activities.
"Reformed Dogmatics" is the main work of Herman Bavinck. He completed the first edition while still working in Kampen. The second edition, revised and expanded, was published already in his “Amsterdam” years. Reformed Dogmatics has been translated into English, German, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and other languages.
